One Piece Theory: Lucci and Kaku Aren’t Really Out Cold

There’s a joke theory that Lucci and Kaku are pretending to be unconscious because of their bad day on Egghead, but there might be something to it.

CP0 has had it rough during One Piece’s Egghead Arc. Lucci got beaten by Luffy, the grunts are handled by the Seraphim and the Pacifistas, and Kaku and Lucci again got brought down by their fellow agent Stussy. As of Chapter 1074, “Mk III,” Lucci and Kaku are lying unconscious in the custody of the Straw Hat Pirates.

This bad day for CP0 has led many fans to assume that Lucci and Kaku are only pretending to be unconscious. Most mean this as a joke, but some have theorized that the two of them are waiting for their moment to strike. After all, they’re in a position where either reason seems plausible.

What Do Lucci and Kaku Get Out of Pretending to Be Unconscious?

The joke version of this theory suggests that Lucci and Kaku are pretending to be out because they don’t want to get beaten again. Both Luffy and Zoro were able to handle them and come out none the worse for wear; fighting them again was far from the challenge it was at Enies Lobby. Thus, Lucci and Kaku, fearing another severe beatdown, will simply pretend that they’re unconscious.

Of course, this is far from how Lucci and Kaku think about Luffy and Zoro. According to Lucci in Chapter 1071, “The Hero Deploys,” he’s refusing to acknowledge Straw Hat as an Emperor of the sea even after being pummeled by him; Kaku likely feels similarly about Pirate Hunter. They’ll probably jump at the chance for a rematch whenever they decide to wake up. They’ll just have to be more careful next time.

This understanding of Lucci and Kaku’s mindset is what has led some fans to believe they’re feigning unconsciousness to get the jump on their enemies. If they’re assuming they can somehow win, then being alone with their intended opponents is an ideal opportunity. All these assassins have to do is wait for Luffy and Zoro to drop their guard for a moment to strike.

There’s even a theory that Stussy is a triple agent. She could have pretended to agree to help Vegapunk, then “take down” Lucci and Kaku with a mild sedative. That way, she could safely escort the two into the doctor’s lab where they’d be able to cause the most trouble. However, Lucci might have acted a little too surprised and unaware for it to not be a genuine betrayal, so she may just be a simple double agent.

In any case, whether this was all planned or not, Lucci and Kaku are right where they want to be. They’re inside Vegapunk’s lab with Luffy and Zoro watching over their presumed unconscious bodies. If they wanted to, they could very well pretend to still be out and strike when they think their opponents’ guard is down.
