Why some fans are not happy at all about the new ‘Spider-Man’ casting

Get ready for a new Spider-Man…again.

Marvel and Sony announced Tuesday that 19 year-old Tom Holland will be taking over the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot of the character, this time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And while fans might be excited to finally see Spidey swinging alongside Iron Man and Captain America, some are not happy about seeing yet another white man behind the mask.

Holland will be the third white actor to take on the part since 2002, and considering there is a very popular bi-racial character swinging around as Spider-Man in the comics currently (Miles Morales), fans were hoping Marvel might take this opportunity to add some diversity to its slate of superheroes. And they were pretty vocal after Tuesday’s announcement.

Marvel’s first movie featuring a black superhero in the lead role will be Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman. That movie was scheduled to hit theaters in November of 2017 … until the announcement of the new Spidey film pushed Panther‘s release date back to July of 2018.For more on the Spider-Man casting, listen to the Escape Pod edition of USA TODAY’s The Mothership podcast.
