Marcus Rashford is a doubt for Man United’s crucial trip to Bournemouth after falling ill, but Erik ten Hag reveals Scott McTominay could return

Marcus Rashford is a fresh doubt for Manchester United‘s trip to Bournemouth on Saturday after falling ill.

United’s 29-goal top scorer missed last weekend’s win over Wolves with a leg injury but has trained with his teammates at Carrington this week.

However, manager Erik ten Hag revealed that Rashford may miss out again through illness as he gave a positive update on Raphael Varane, who returned to action against Wolves, and Scott McTominay who has not played since early April.

‘So a positive, Varane is definitely available,’ said Ten Hag.

‘Scott joined in training. When we find how well he does in training, then we know if he will be in. Rashy trained well the whole week but today he reported that he is ill. We have to see how he recovers during the day and see tomorrow.’

United will clinch a top-four spot if they beat Bournemouth and fifth-placed Liverpool lose at home to Aston Villa.

Ten Hag added: ‘When I see this project, first of all it’s important to get in the Champions League. I look to the next game, Bournemouth, we have to win that game to get in the Champions League.

‘Focus on the game, the games coming up, the first game is the most important.

‘I think Bournemouth is a really brilliant club. Three games before the end of the season they are definitely in the Premier League next season as well. It’s massive. You can see clear patterns, so well done.’

Midfielder Scott McTominay’s condition is not clear, although he has reported back to training

The Dutchman was reluctant to be drawn over whether United will turn Marcel Sabitzer’s loan from Bayern Munich into a permanent deal after the Austria midfielder was ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

But he paid tribute to Phil Jones after United confirmed that the England midfielder is leaving Old Trafford after 12 years.

‘I saw him (in training for) 20 minutes, the first training of the year!’ said Ten Hag.

‘He has a great career, what he achieved, winning the FA Cup, winning the Europa League, being present at two World Cups, massive career at Man United. All the credits for his career.’

Earlier, United confirmed that Phil Jones will leave the club when his contract expires
