Manchester United announce a pre-season friendly against Lyon at Murrayfield… with organisers eyeing a 67,000 capacity crowd at the home of Scottish rugby

Manchester United have announced the club will play Lyon in a pre-season friendly at Scottish Rugby’s home venue Murrayfield.

Erik ten Hag and his players will face the Ligue 1 side in Edinburgh on July 19, before embarking on their tour of the United States.

The fixture will mark the first time in 13 years that Man United have played a match in Scotland.

The Red Devils were last hosted in Scotland by Rangers in a Champions League group stage match in 2010, when a Wayne Rooney penalty proved the difference between the two sides.

Man United football director, John Murtough, said the fixture would allow the club’s fans in Scotland and the UK to travel to watch the pre-season friendly.

Manchester United will play their first match in Scotland since 2010 when they face Lyon

The pre-season friendly will take place at Scottish Rugby’s home venue Murrayfield on July 19

‘Whilst as a club we have a great historical links to Scotland, this will be the first time we’ve played at BT Murrayfield, and we’re really looking forward to performing in front of our Scottish fans in what will be a great occasion in a world-class sporting venue,’ Murtough said.

‘This is an important competitive match for our squad as we commence our preparations for the season ahead.

‘With a 14.00 BST kick-off during the school holidays, we hope many families and young fans from all over Scotland and the UK will be able to travel to the game.’

Scottish Rugby has targeted a sell-out 67,000 crowd for the pre-season friendly.

The figure could exceed the 65,442 crowd which attended a friendly between Liverpool and Napoli in 2019, the last football match held at the stadium.

United will be reunited with their former player Laurent Blanc in the friendly, with the Frenchman now coaching Lyon.

The Red Devils will play Lyon for just the fifth time, with their last meeting ending in a 2-1 aggregate victory in the Champions League last-16 in 2008.

Former Manchester United centre back Laurent Blanc is now the head coach of Lyon in Ligue 1

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side went on to beat Chelsea in the final in Moscow.

Ten Hag’s squad will travel to the United States following the fixture, where they will embark on a four-match tour.

A match against Premier League rivals Arsenal will launch the tour in New York on July 22, before a largely youth side will face Wrexham in San Diego on July 25.

The US tour will continue with a match against Spanish giants Real Madrid in Houston on July 26, with a friendly against Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas following on July 30.
